When juice meets GLP-1

Langers, a 65 year-old California-based juice brand, has debuted its first "GLP-1 support beverage".  Launched as an extension of its existing "No Worries" line, the brand is all about fibre, thanks to its content of "chicory root fibre for digestive support".  Unusually for a GLP- 1 support product, there's 0g of protein.

Langers is best-known for a diversity of traditional products, such as 100% fruit juices and blends, ginger beer, cocktail mixers, apple cider vinegar and apple butter, widely sold in grocery, such as at CostCo.

No Worries claims that it supports:

  • "weight loss, bone and muscle recovery"

  • "fullness & balanced satiety"

  • "a better GLP-1 experience"

The primary ingredient is 8g of chicory root per 355 ml can. Other ingredients and benefits are:

  • lightly sparkling

  • 101mg of magnesium (24% RDI)

  • 86mg of calcium (7% RDI)

  • vitamin B12 (20% of RDI)

  • total carbohydrates 10g (2g net carbs)

  • sweetened with stevia (no added sugars)

  • low calorie (35 calories per 355ml can)

The newly-launched product is available on Amazon and at the Texas-based Spec’s chain, priced at around $3.15 (€2.67) per 355ml can. So far it comes in one flavour - Tart Cherry Pineapple.

It's worth noting that the added nutrients are at a pretty low level. GLP-1a users may have nutrient deficiencies thanks to their lower food intake. But "nutrient density" is a something that has very low consumer interest or understanding, and hence most GLP-1 products focus on protein and fibre, which consumers do understand.

No Worries is taking an interesting approach - and one unusual in the world of GLP-1 support products - to focus solely on the fibre and digestive wellness benefit. It may be addressing an important gap in the market. People using GLP-1a weight loss and diabetes medications, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, experience a dramatic slowdown in their intestinal transit time - down to just a fifth of the usual rate. This means that food stays inside them for longer, contributing to the sense of fullness and this in turn contributes to people's desire to eat less.

On the other hand this produces unpleasant side-effects for many people, such as bloating and nausea. If No Worries can genuinely help with these problems Langers might be on to something.
